Sparassis is probably confined to conifers. The common name is cauliflower fungus, due to its resemblance to the vegetable.
It is annual and soft and fleshy, only lasting for a coupe of weeks. It is often found on the ground near pines. It is apparently edible.
Sparassis is mostly confined to the root system of the host tree, but can extend upto three metres up the stem.
The decay caused is a brown rot resulting in cubical cracking, often leading to stem or root failure.
