
This fungi can be found on the trunks of birch trees, often quite high up. It is mostly found in NE Scotland, being rare elsewhere.
It appears mostly from wounds, but can rupture bark.
It is a perennial canker.
Little is known about the decay, but the canker prevents occlusion of the wound.
Research is being conducted presently to discover a cancer retarding drug that can be derived from this fungus.
