Armillaria

Commonly known as honey fungus, with several species known collectively under this name.
This is an agressive fungus, which attacks sap wood. I have often seen buttress roots turned to a damp mush. Pseudosclaratial plates- black zone lines- are often present. Blackish rhizomorphs- root like structures that search out food sources- can often be discovered in the soil or under dead bark.
I have seen honey fungus at the base of live and dead trees including oak, red oak, turkey oak, beech, maples, sweet chestnuts, and birch.
The main identifiction of this fungus is the often present ring around the stem. The spores are whitish in colour.
