Polyporus squamosus
Commonly known as dryads saddle.
I have seen Polyporus on beech and sycamore.
It is an annual fungus with soft white flesh. When fallen from the tree it breaks down quickly and soaks up rain water like a sponge. It can fruit twice a year.
Dryads saddle causes an intense white rot, but the degradation of the wood is very localised. Thick, brown layers of mycelium can be found in cavities and pseudosclerotial plates are often present in the wood.
