Pholiota squarrosa
Pholiota squarrosa is most often found at the base of trees, appearing on the ground nearby or from wounds low down on the stem.
The stems are tough, with the characteristic Pholiota ring present when young. The toadstools are whitish with brown scales.
I have seen it at base of beech and walnut, but also from low wounds on hornbeam.
