This fungi is quite rare in Britain. It is often found on the base of the host tree, near ground level.
I have seen it on poplars and willows, and now on oak.
It appears to be very aggressive on these trees, I have seen major root plate failure of both. A bracket appeared on a willow one year, then another the following year. In the first strong winds the root plate failed. The tree was riddled with mycelium and the buttress roots were heavily degraded.
An important ident feature is that the flesh and tube layer are very similar pale fawn colours. Rigidoporus is very similar in appearance, but the tube layer has a cinnamon colour to it.
