Daldinia concentrica
This fungus is also known as King Alfred's cramp balls.
It is very common to ash, but I have also seen it on dead parts of a hornbeam.
Daldinia can be used as tinder to store heat to start a fire.
Concentrica comes from the formation of its layers.
